The Media Player is and has always been associated with .MP3 files. However, if I create my own mp3 audio file and insert it into the same markup, it works in all browsers, including IE9 with the "controls" attribute. If it is, your swfPath is incorrect or your file is missing. I hope I'm mistaken & I wake up tomorrow to find out this is something temporary, or bug of some sort relating to flash.
