If you click a link it is supposed to open the page in the current window (i.e. F4 for Safe mode, F5 for Safe mode with Networking etc.. If the protected mode is causing this problem, it seems that MS might find the reason why and either fix it with an update, or resubmit a working IE 11 as help.
